Loch Field Cottage
THS member Rob Wiseman has done some research into his Tongwynlais cottage.
Loch Field Cottage was build about 1790 for the canal workers. The tyth map of 1840 lists it as Loch Field Cottages and gardens. It was actually two cottages and would have probably housed about 8 people per cottage. It has some interesting features such as a bee hive bread oven, stone spiral stair case and a rare coffin drop built into the ceiling. I’ve lived here for almost 30 years and have had many spooky incidents, especially when the children were young.
Hi Rob. Just stumbled across your article by chance and thought I would touch base with you as I think it was yourself that we sold the house to around 1991? Julie, my wife at the time, but now divorced many years ago, was a relative of your wife if I’m not mistaken? We lived there, with Ben and Samantha, for around 5 years from 1986 to 1991. As you will be aware, it was Park View Cottage at the time, named by the previous owners and its good to know you have renamed it to its original title.
I know you have carried out extensive work on the building since we owned it and retained its character, which is really great. The last time I saw it in the flesh was probably about 15 years ago now when passing on a dog walk and it really did look something. From the photo, it looks like you still have the old steel wheel we rescued from West Wales in the front garden. Fantastic!
Hope all is well with you and the family.
Best wishes,
Jeff
